The families of young people missing after a deadly fire at a venue in a Swiss winter destination are facing an agonising wait for official news and pleading for clues about their loved ones online.

The fire ripped through the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of the first day of the year. Confirmed images depict the roof structure igniting as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.

Authorities have stated that it could take considerable time to formally name the those who perished of the fire, which resulted in the death of four dozen individuals and hurt another 119.
