Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
