A high-ranking Russian general has been killed following an blast in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The incident occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators indicated that one line of inquiry suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Scene of the Incident
Teams have been dispatched to the scene, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.
Media coverage suggest the blast took place in a parking area near a residential building.
Pattern of Incidents
Since the beginning of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been attacked within Moscow.
This new event comes after other high-profile incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.
While a Ukrainian source previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of policy.
The conflict has witnessed covert operations extending into the heart of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
